If you want to relish the #ParsiBhonu which is almost like a king's feast here is an amazingly cozy little place tucked in Goregoan West, bang opposite the entrance gate of Vibgyor school. The host for the evening Malcolm Kolah, co-owner of this joint Black Stove Co. made sure our dinner was taken care of while he himself churned out wonderful Parsi delicacies one after the other.
To quote him "It is all that I have learnt from my mother " and I must say he is gifted with a cooking legacy and in the flavors of his cuisine the blessings of his mom linger all the way.
On other days they serve Parsi and Sindhi food, they bake their own bread and patisserie. Currently they are having the #ParsiBhonuweekend. If you are a #FoodLover especially #ParsiFoodLover then book your lunch or dinner for the next weekend and have a great time.
*Ambience Ambience is cozy and Malcolm and his sweetly humble staff makes you feel at home.
*Hygiene Clean toilets are a must and these days restaurants hardly bother about this very important aspect. Thankfully this place has a clean toilet, a must when you are out with kids. Where restaurants try and dwarf their kitchen to add more table space Malcolm makes sure (his domain) the kitchen is spacious neat and absolutely hygienic. I made a point to see it.
*Service We simply don't like waiters hovering over our table and putting in a sense of hurry. Aldrince was so cute and we even taught him to say "Margi " for chicken. He was in no hurry and I am sure he was trained well, I guess by Malcolm himself, to lay and pick up the cutlery in a particular manner.
*Food Firstly if you are not a Parsi you need to know that to have a Lagan nu bhonu you truly need a huge HUGE appetite coz it's eggs, chicken , fish , mutton all put in together in the platter. Malcolm wants you to have your feast in truly lagan style so the food is served on the customary patra (banana leaves)
First the Sarya arrive with Gajar Meva nu Achar with Rotli.
~Russian pattice.
Simply yummylicious! Perfectly delicate!! Melt in the mouth!!!
~Kheema kebabs. Little dry. The crust could be a little softer but had the typical homemade rustic flavor.
~Patra ni Kolmi (twist to patra ni machi)
Served like a continental dish steamed prawns dressed in green chutney and wrapped in banana leaves. The chutney, I am sure, Malcolm sticks to his mom's recipe. I like my prawns fried and a little spicy so I may not have relished it completely but kids loved it. Smooth, fresh and no fishy smell. And finally my younger son Shahaan was relieved, he doesn't have any allergy to prawns.
*Sali margi
I have had the most terrible forms of this dish in some of the #pretendingtobeParsiRestaurants But Malcolm simply gets this one right. Loved it. Best part -the onions simply disappeared in the gravy. Not too thick perfectly flavored rustic homemade feel to it. Truly sali margi. On regular days you could order this dish which comes with pav (bread) baked in-house.
*Mutton Pulav Dar
This is one delicacy I always waited for as a child in Lagan-Navjyote. But surely by the time one has binged on the other ones, your stomach is yelling NO! Topped with half cut boiled eggs, sumptuous chunks of mutton and nicely flavored rice with dhansak dar. Hugs! Had my fill this time. The dhansak dar was exactly like the one my wife makes. Suits the city palate not the typical one with the Udvada hotel flavor.
*Mango falooda After the gastronomical indulgence the much needed cooling relief. The falooda gets a big thumps up from my dessert lover son.
Of course the Pallonji Raspberry goes hand in hand with morsels of delight.
~What each one of us would indulge more in ~
My foodie son Shahen Sali Margi / Russian Pattice
My best half Sonnal Russian Pattice / Patra Ni Prawns
My desert lover younger one Shahaan Mango Falooda / Pulav Dar
Me Sali margi / Pulav Dar
~ Straight from the taste buds ~
Malcolm plays safe with the spices obviously for varying taste preferences. I suppose he could spice up the dishes a little. The craft an love with which the food is prepared surely conforms - my western SUBURB finally has an original PARSI FOOD JOINT.
It's never too late to celebrate. Book your Patra for the next weekend and have a great time with your family and friends.

I am simply a #noncomformingParsi in search of the flavors of my mother's delicacies that I lost with her. In Malcolm's cooking I may have found some of those.
